Fruit Loops are an American cereal, introduced in the 1960s by the brand Kellogg’s, characterized by its vibrant colors and mascot Toucan Sam. Unfortunately, Fruit Loops contain a few animal-derived ingredients, meaning that the popular breakfast cereal is not considered vegan.

What ingredients make fruit loops non-vegan?

Vitamin D3

It may come as a surprise, but Vitamin D3 is derived from lanolin, a wax extracted from sheep wool, and therefore it is not vegan. Animal-derived Vitamin D3 is a common ingredient in many bowls of cereal, so keep an eye out for it when checking ingredient lists.

Sugar

Sugar is another common ingredient in many favorite childhood bowls of cereal, but refined sugar is often processed with bone char from the bones of cattle, making it technically not suitable for a vegan lifestyle.

Artificial Colors

Fruit Loops contain artificial colors red 40, yellow 5, blue 1, and yellow 6. While these colors are not technically made with animal products, some vegans choose to avoid them due to concerns over animal testing.

What cereals are vegan?

While is it unfortunate that vegans can not enjoy Fruit Loops, there are still a wider variety of vegan-friendly cereals to choose from. Look for cereals that don’t contain added synthetic vitamins, especially added vitamin d, many of these are naturally vegan. Check out some of these options!
