Christmas crack gets its name from its crispy texture that cracks when you bite it, and maybe a little from how incredibly addictive it is when you take your first bite.

Why make this recipe

Christmas crack is excellent for bringing to holiday parties, putting on cookie trays, or giving as gifts. You’ll love how quick and easy it is to make with just a few simple ingredients, and everyone will love how it tastes!

Oh my goodness, these really are so good. I used gluten free pretzels (we aren’t gluten free, but we just really like that kind!) The directions were very clear, and this was by far the most fun recipe I made today for our gifting cookie trays. I was able to find vegan forest-themed sprinkles and it looks so pretty! This will be a new Christmas tradition for us! Thank you!!!

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Saltine Crackers – or flat pretzles thins. The traditional Christmas crack recipes call for saltine crackers, but I like the extra crunchy texture of flat pretzels.
  • Vegan Butter – any high-quality vegan butter will work. Stick butter works best since it tends to have less water content than tub butter. If you use my homemade vegan butter, use the stick version.
  • Brown Sugar – look for organic brown sugar to be sure that it’s vegan.
  • Vegan Chocolate Chips – any dairy-free chocolate chips will work. I used the Trader Joe’s brand, but Enjoy Life or any other vegan chocolate can be used. Mini chocolate chips melt a little easier and faster.
  • Sprinkles – Look for sprinkles that don’t contain confectioner’s glaze to ensure they are vegan. You can also omit the sprinkles and use coarse or Kosher salt.

Helpful tools

  • A large, rimmed cookie sheet – You want a cookie sheet with edges to ensure the toffee and chocolate don’t spill into your oven.
  • A small saucepan with a heavy bottom for cooking the brown sugar toffee.
  • Silicone Spatula – for spreading out the hot chocolate chips.
  • Parchment Paper – To line your cookie sheet so it doesn’t stick. Don’t use waxed paper it must be parchment.

Step 4 – Once it starts bubbling in the middle, set a timer for 3 minutes and continue stirring until the timer goes off.

Step 7 – Sprinkle the top with chocolate chips and place in the oven for 2 more minutes. Then smooth out to chocolate with a silicone spatula.

Step 8 – Decorate with vegan sprinkles or kosher salt while it is still warm and sticky, then allow it to sit untouched for 3 hours to cool and harden completely before breaking it into smaller pieces and storing it in glass jars.

Pro Tips

  • Use a timer to make sure that you don’t overcook the toffee or chocolate chips. It can burn quickly if cooked too long.
  • Work quickly when pouring the toffee and spreading the chocolate, they will start to firm up if allowed to cool.
  • For simple toffee crisps, omit the chocolate and sprinkle with kosher salt.

How long will Christmas crack keep

If you can stop yourself from eating it all, Christmas crack will keep for up to 3 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature.

I like to store the Christmas crack in cute jars with a pretty ribbon tied around them and give it as a gift to friends and neighbors.
