Why make this recipe

Split pea soup needs to cook low and slow all day, so it’s the perfect soup to make in the crockpot. It’s perfect for busy days when you have time to toss everything in the slow cooker in the morning and come home to dinner ready to eat.

I use vegan bacon bits in my version to create the smoky ham flavor of traditional split pea soup, making it taste authentic.

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Split Peas – You will need dried green split peas.
  • Vegetable Broth – any vegan broth will work well.
  • Carrots – for texture and brightness.
  • Celery – for texture.
  • Onions – for flavor. You can add 1/2 tsp of onion powder instead.
  • Garlic Cloves – for flavor. You can add 1/2 tsp of garlic powder instead.
  • Vegan Bacon Bits – This replaces the ham in traditional split pea soup. You can also swap this for vegan bacon, vegan ham, or add 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the soup for a smoky flavor.
  • Thyme – for flavor. You can use dried or fresh thyme. You can also add bay leaves if you choose, or other herbs or spices.
  • Salt and Pepper – for flavor.

Helpful tools

  • Slow Cooker – aka Crockpot. This makes a large pot of soup, so you will need one that holds at least 8 cups of liquid.
