❤️ Why make this recipe
Vegan pizza makes for a great quick and easy meal that the whole family will love. My teenage boys love hearty protein-packed pizzas that fill them up like pizza with vegan sausage crumbles, or vegan pepperoni on top. This BBQ chicken pizza whips up in minutes and is one of their all-time favorites!
The BBQ sauce is a great alternative to the same old boring tomato sauce and my homemade BBQ sauce is not too sweet like storebought sauce can be.
🧾 Ingredients and substitutions
- Pizza Dough – I like to use the premade pizza dough that they sell in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. These are usually vegan and make homemade pizza a super quick and easy meal.
- Barbecue Sauce – many store-bought brands are vegan (see my BBQ sauce brand guide) or use my recipe for homemade vegan BBQ sauce.
- Vegan Chicken – I like to use soy curls that I rehydrate in vegan chicken broth and coat in BBQ sauce. You can also use chicken seitan, store-bought vegan chicken strips, jackfruit, mushrooms, or any other meat substitute that you want. You can learn more about soy curls here.
- Geen Bell Peppers – for flavor. The flavor of the green pepper balances out the sweetness of BBQ sauce. If I have time I also love carmalized onion on top of this pizza too. For some added spice, you can also use a tablespoon of chopped seeded jalapenos.
- Vegan Pizza Cheese – You can use your favorite vegan mozzarella cheese or my homemade vegan pizza cheese to top your pizza.
🔪 Helpful tools
- A large non-stick pizza pan.
- Pizza cutter for slicing the pizza.

🥄 How to make vegan BBQ chicken pizza
A full printable version of this recipe with ingredient measurements is available at the bottom of this post.
Step 1 – Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C).
Step 2 – Stretch out your premade pizza dough to the shape of your pizza pan. (I find that using a rolling pin dusted in flour is the easiest way to roll out the dough if you are not experienced in throwing pizza dough.)
Step 3 – Rehydrate the soy curls – heat 1/2 cup of chicken broth in a saucepan until boiling, then add 1 cup of soy curls, stir well, turn off the heat, cover, and let them sit for 5 minutes until they soak up all of the broth.
Step 4 – Place 1 cup of vegan chicken in a bowl and mix with 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce until well coated.
Step 5 – Spread the remaining cup of BBQ sauce over your pizza dough as you would traditional pizza sauce.
Step 6 – Top your pizza with vegan cheese, sliced green peppers, and BBQ-coated faux chicken.
Step 7 – Bake the pizza in a 425°F (218°C) oven for about 15 minutes until the crust is browned and the cheese is melted. Allow cooling for about 5 minutes before slicing.
Serve this pizza with a side salad like vegan chicken Caesar, apple salad, kale salad, broccoli slaw, or chickpea cucumber salad for a full meal.
👩🏻🍳 Pro Tips
- You don’t need to pre-cook the vegan chicken, it will cook on the pizza.
- If you are using a baking sheet to bake your pizza, you may want to coat it with a little olive oil to avoid sticking to the pan.
- You can also dust the bottom of the pizza dough with cornmeal to help it not stick to the pan and give the crust a little extra crunch.
❓ How can I make this gluten-free?
If you use a gluten-free vegan pizza crust, and make it with soy curls, this pizza will be gluten-free. You can also turn it into polenta pizza bites for a gluten-free alternative.
🥡 Storage and reheating

This looks sooo delicious!! I can’t wait to make it for me and my 3 year old! If I use abbot’s butcher vegan chopped chicken, do you think I need to cook it before placing on the pizza? I know you said with soy curls that you don’t need to cook them first, but I wasn’t sure about this kind of faux chicken.
Thanks so much for your help! 🙂
