Why make this recipe

If you are looking for that sweet, spicy, creamy flavor of Bang Bang sauce, but need it to be dairy-free, you will need to make your own. Luckily, it’s just a few simple ingredients stirred together to make the sauce in about 2 minutes.

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Vegan Mayonaise – You can use my recipe and make your own homemade vegan mayo, or use any store-bought vegan mayo
  • Sweet Chili Sauce – You can make my homemade sweet chili sauce or buy a bottle from the Asian section of your local grocery store.
  • Seasoned Rice Vinegar – This can be omitted if you don’t have any, but it adds a nice acidity that balances the sweetness.
  • Agave Nectar – this is optional for a little extra sweetness. Traditional bang bang sauce uses honey, but if you want it to be vegan, use agave or maple syrup.
  • Sriracha – or hot sauce for a little bit of spice. Adjust it to your preferred spice level.

How to make vegan bang bang sauce

A full printable version of this recipe with ingredient measurements is available at the bottom of this post.

Step 1 – In a small bowl, add mayo, sweet chili sauce, rice vinegar, sriracha, and agave.

Step 2 – Then stir until well until you have a creamy sauce. You can give it a little taste and add more sriracha for a spicier sauce. You can also give it a shake of salt or garlic powder for added flavor.

Step 3 – Serve as a dipping sauce or drizzle it over bang bang cauliflower, bang bang tofu, or bang bang broccoli. It’s great over rice and noodles too.

Pro Tips

  • Feel free to leave out the agave nectar; I find it is sweet enough with just the sweetness from the sweet chili sauce and seasoned rice vinegar.
  • Add more sriracha if desired. I like my Bang Bang sauce a little spicier.

Storage

Refrigerator: This vegan bang bang sauce needs to be stored in an airtight container in the fridge, where leftovers will last for up to 1 week.

How to use vegan bang bang sauce

This dairy-free bang bang sauce can be used in place of traditional bang bang sauce to make bang bang chicken or shrimp dairy-free.

You can put it over fried broccoli, fried cauliflower, vegan fried shrimp, vegan fried chicken, or fried tofu to make a variety of vegan meals. It’s also great as a dipping sauce for tofu fries, vegan popcorn chicken, or zucchini fries.
