Ingredients and substitutions
- Bisquick – this can be store-bought vegan biscuit mix or homemade. For gluten-free use my homemade gluten-free Bisquick. If you don’t have Bisquick, see my homemade Bisquick recipe below.
- Plant-Based Milk – to provide liquid to form the Bisquick into the dough. You can use any type of vegan milk that you like.
- Vegan Cheddar Style Cheese – for a cheesy biscuit. You can use any store-bought vegan cheese you like or you can use my recipe to make your own vegan cheddar cheese.
- Vegan Butter – to coat the biscuits. I think that my homemade vegan butter recipe tastes the best, but you can use any dairy-free butter you wish.
- Garlic Powder – to flavor the butter.
- Parsley – to flavor the butter and make it pretty.
- Salt – for flavor.
- Old Bay Seasoning – for flavor.
How to make vegan cheddar bay biscuits
Step 1 – Start by preheating the oven to 450°F (230°C).
Mix the dry ingredients
Step 2 – Then, place a cup of vegan Bisquick in a mixing bowl, add ½ cup of vegan shredded cheddar cheese, and stir.
Step 3 – Pour in 1/3 cup of plain soy milk or other plant-based milk and mix with a fork, just enough to combine the ingredients. (don’t over stir).
Step 4 – Drop about 1/3 cup scoops of biscuit dough onto an ungreased baking sheet. (You can use parchment paper, but there is really no need.)
Step 5 – Bake for 8-11 minutes until slightly golden and dry.
Step 6 – While the biscuits are cooking, mix together ¼ cup of melted butter, a teaspoon of parsley, ¼ teaspoon garlic salt, and 1/8 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning.
Step 7 – Take the biscuits out of the oven. Place them one at a time in the bowl of garlic butter to coat them completely. Serve warm.
For cheesier-tasting biscuits, you can add 1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast along with the dry ingredients.
How to make homemade vegan Bisquick?
In a food processor add 1 tablespoon of cold vegan butter or coconut oil, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, and a tablespoon of baking powder. Pulse until well combined and use in place of 1 cup of Bisquick.
Pro Tips
- If the dough seems dry, add another splash of soy milk until all the flour is moist and sticky like traditional biscuit dough.
- You can make these with regular wheat Bisquick or store-bought gluten-free Bisquick, however, if you are making them gluten-free, they come out the best with my gluten-free Bisquick recipe.
- If you are using store-bought Bisquick, be sure to check the ingredients and make sure that it is vegan. (Many times the low-fat version is vegan).
- You can use any type of vegan margarine for the garlic butter, but I prefer my homemade vegan butter recipe! It tastes more like real butter than any other vegan margarine that I have tried.
- If you don’t have Old Bay Seasoning you can leave it out or add a small dash of celery salt, cayenne, and paprika to the butter.

I’m not sure why I haven’t left a comment before but I’ve made these many many times. I made them again tonight so hubby could have a snack when he got off work after 12 hours and he was in heaven. So I wanted to make sure I’d commented to tell you how much we love them . Oh and I couldn’t find any Bisquick this time so I used an off brand all purpose baking mix and it worked fine. Easy and delicious. My favorite combo!
I’m so happy that you and your husband like these biscuits! They are a favorite in my house too! 🙂
I am not vegan however i have been trying to do some gluten free/vegan options to see if it helps with my inflammation (also have friends who are vegan so always trying to find recipes to make for them for when they visit), that being said i did not have vegan cheese on hand when i made these however they were amazing and not dry as many vegan recipes can be.
I’m happy that you liked the recipe, Kerry! 🙂
Monica, do you think you could make them ahead or even freeze the uncooked biscuit before baking? Add to the garlicky butter once they are baked. Would you defrost before baking?
Hi Frankie, I don’t think that they would freeze well before baking. Once the baking soda in the Bisquick gets wet, it activates it and makes it rise. You need to bake the biscuits within a few minutes after mixing the batter.
That makes sense
Thank you
I just made these and they are Ah-MAZING! I used fresh chives instead of parsley, cause that’s what I had. I will most certainly make these again, and again! Wonderful recipe!
I’m so happy that you like them, Erin! they are a favorite in my house too! 🙂
These were so good!!!! I used steak seasoning (had no old bay), but still!!! I already have to make another batch!
I’m so happy that you liked them! I bet the steak seasoning gave them a lot of flavor too! 🙂
Wow! My family loves Red Lobster’s cheddar rolls so maybe I can make these for them instead. Thanks for the great recipe!
I hope that you all like them as much as we do! 🙂
Hi, could I use regular salt instead of garlic salt for these?
Yes, feel free to leave out the garlic. Enjoy! 🙂
Do these freeze well?
My family eats the whole batch before they are even cool, so I’ve never tried freezing them, but I think that they would freeze well. Let me know if you try it. 🙂
so excited to try these! is it dried, or fresh parsley?
Either fresh or dry parsley will work well. Fresh parsley will give you the strongest flavor. Enjoy! 🙂
Hi these sound delicious but I cannot eat oats and am gluten and dairy free. I wonder whether a mix of regular gluten-free, buckwheat and quinoa flour would work in this recipe?
Thanks,
Fiona
I think that it would work okay, but gluten-free flours can bake up very differently. I have never tested this recipe with those, but if you try it let me know how it turns out. 🙂
Just wanted to say I’ve made with two different GF flours and they come out amazing!!! I bake for 15 instead of 11 minutes. They are so good, I’ve made them 4x in one week!!
I’m so happy that you like them, Emily! They are a favorite in my house too! 🙂
These were scrumptious! They must make really tiny biscuits if you make six, because i doubled the recipe and only got 9 small/ medium biscuits. Really happy with the outcome though!
I’m glad that you liked them, Alicia! 🙂
Wonderful! I kinda fibbed around with the garlic oil seasonings but it was still fantastic. I had to force myself to stop eating them! Paired well with my spaghetti squash, thank yooou!
I’m so happy that you liked them, Destiny! 🙂
Our GF/DF family devoured these as well, and we’re making more to impress our extended family members for our Christmas dinner tonight! Fabulous recipe, and oh so easy!
I’m so happy that you liked them! We just ate some last night too. They never disappoint! 🙂
Absolutely amazing!
I made these today for Christmas Eve Dinner and they were gone in 5 seconds. Absolutely delicious and no one noticed they were vegan. Will make more tomorrow because everyone is asking for more.
They taste just like red lobster!!
I’m so happy that you and your family liked them! My kids devour them in no time too! 🙂
Wow!! Amazing! I wasn’t sure if they would turn out really tasting like the Red Lobster Cheddar Bay biscuits, but they’re better from what I remember theirs tasting like. Mine aren’t gluten free, but they are vegan. My omnivorous son who likes to ridicule my food surprisingly said they are delicious and he can’t tell they’re vegan. Thanks for the recipe😋. I appreciate it!!!
Aww Latasha, I’m so happy to hear that you and your son liked them. My boys cheer when they see me making them! 🙂
These were amazing! I have missed Red Lobster Biscuits so much! I used your gluten free Bisquick recipe and they came out so good that way! It was hard to believe that they were gluten free! Thanks so much for this great recipe!
You’re welcome Sherri! These are my favorite biscuits, I mean how can you go wrong with anything thing dipped in vegan butter and garlic salt? 🙂
I’m surprised these would be good without any oil in the biscuit itself? Hesitant but going to try as soon as I get some vegan cheese. I already have gluten free mix from Pillsbury. Going to check the ingredients against your gluten free recipe and see how it stacks up. Thanks for sharing!
The biscuits are really dry coming out of the oven, but that makes them soak up the garlic butter that you coat them in! I hope that you love them as much as we do! 🙂
These were AWSOME! My whole family loved them!
So good to hear! My kids ask me to make them just about every day! It’s hard not to like something dipped in garlic butter! 🙂
I never thought that I would be able to eat Red Lobster Biscuits again! These were amazing and very close to what I remember! Thanks so much for making a vegan and gluten free version of these!
You’re welcome Amy! So happy that you were able to have them again! I had missed them too! 🙂
